The fingerprint scanner feels like an afterthought, a last-minute addition on Motorola’s part. Instead, it just takes up space that could have been allocated to the display. It looks like it functions as a Home button, but it doesn’t. My minor favorite element of the Moto Z’s design is its front-facing fingerprint scanner. The front-facing fingerprint scanner isn’t my favorite implementation of security technology. And, yes, that’s exactly how I used this review unit during my week of testing. This is especially handy when walking around catching Pokémon in broad daylight. Speaking of which, the Moto Z’s 5.5-inch Quad HD display is gorgeous and notably bright. It’s as if there’s no bezel, though that feeling quickly dissipates once you turn on the display. I like how the glass on top of the display cascades down to the phone’s edges. We have a few quibbles, but this is the most sophisticated Motorola smartphone we’ve seen. But it doesn’t protrude as much with the Style Shell snapped-on. The Moto Z’s rear-facing camera lens pops out a bit. Notice how the glass over the display curves down into the edges. And helps reduce the heat that reaches your skin. The Moto Z comes with a free, snap-in Style Shell that adds a bit more girth to the phone. Since it isn’t thick enough to comfortably cradle with your shoulder. Sans Moto Mods, it’s not the easiest phone to grab with either. It becomes almost scalding hot if it’s charging when you’re playing a game. However beautiful the design may be, the phone feels flimsy without a Moto Mod snapped on. That said, you might find the Moto Z a bit too slim. The phone is 5.2mm thick, sliming the Nexus 6 and the OnePlus 3’s 7.3mm chassis. The Moto Z is one of the thinnest smartphones available this is both a blessing and a curse. ![]() Motorola’s Best Looking Phone The Moto Z is a seriously stunning phone. And the Moto Mods’ mere existence is an excellent indicator that Motorola can thrive under Lenovo’s wing. And even a portable projector that can display a 70-inch image. With extra battery life, name-brand and fashion aesthetics, better sound. Those Moto Mods you might have heard about? They snap into the back of the Moto Z, extending the phone’s capabilities. It has much the same high-end specs and components level as its competitors, but it packs an extra punch. The Moto Z is as futuristic looking as it is future-facing. This is Motorola with a renewed sense of self. ![]() Gone are the campy, plastic Moto X models of the past. ![]() It’s the most sophisticated smartphone I’ve seen from Motorola since the first Android-powered Droid led in 2009. But now, under Lenovo’s corporate banner. Indeed, last year’s Moto X Pure Edition was a great phone. Lenovo had to swoop in, buy the company, and rile things up. I was getting settled into the idea that Motorola had found a winning formula for its flagship line.
